She worked as a news anchor and reporter for KERO-TV in Bakersfield, California, and WFAA-TV in Dallas, Texas, before becoming one of the initial anchors of ABC News’ World News Now, along with Aaron Brown, when the show debuted in 1992. McRee departed the show in 1993 to become a Good Morning America Sunday host, a Lifetime Magazine anchor and correspondent, and an ABC Day One reporter. In 1994, she relocated to Los Angeles, California, to serve as an anchor and reporter for KABC-TV. She was hired to succeed Joan Lunden as co-anchor of Good Morning America in 1997. After Charles Gibson left the program in 1998, she was matched with Kevin Newman.
She and Newman were both replaced in 1999 and reassigned to new positions at ABC News. McRee was a host and correspondent for California Connected, a TV news magazine that broadcast on 12 PBS stations in California from 2004 until 2007. McRee’s final year saw a 43% increase in ratings. Due to a lack of finance, the initiative was canceled. McRee began stepping in as co-anchor of Good Day L.A. on KTTV, the Fox-owned and operated television station in Los Angeles, in February 2017. McRee joined the newly formed Spectrum News 1 Network in November 2018, co-anchoring the morning show and anchoring the evening show, LA TIMES TODAY, a co-production of The Los Angeles Times and Spectrum News 1. McRee won The LA Press Club’s Television Journalist of the Year award in 2021 after winning many Emmy Awards and the 2007 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Journalism Award for researching and producing California Connected: War Stories from Ward 7-D.
