Lisa Guernsey is an early childhood education researcher, author, and former journalist from the United States. She started as an Associate Editor for The Chronicle of Higher Education. In 1999, she was hired as a reporter for The New York Times, where she wrote about new technologies, science, and education. She began freelancing for a number of big media after leaving The New York Times in 2002, and she was a contributor to the book Mobile Technology for Children: Designing for Interaction and Learning. The impact of mobile technology on children was the focus of this book. Guernsey joined New America in 2009 as a senior policy analyst and was appointed Director of the Early Education Initiative the following year. In 2013, she was appointed to lead the organization’s new Learning and Technologies Project. Her recent research and writing is focused on progress in early education and digital learning technologies.

Guernsey has written four further books. Her 2012 book, Screen Time: How Electronic Media – From Baby Videos to Educational Software – Affects Your Young Child, focuses on issues of young children’s exposure to television. Guernsey did a significant study as the author of this book, concluding that exposure to television need not be harmful to young children when new parents focus on “the three C’s” involved: content, context, and the individual kid. In 2013, she gave a TEDx lecture in Washington, D.C. about the impact of modern technologies, such as iPads, on early learning. Her most recent book, Tap, Click, Read: Growing Readers in a Screen Age, was released in September 2015 and was co-written with Michael H. Levine of Sesame Workshop’s Cooney Centre.
