Fletcher began her on-air career with KEZI-TV in Eugene, Oregon, while still in college, in 1990. After graduation, she accepted a position as an anchor for KTVZ-TV in Bend, Oregon. She returned to Eugene and KEZI in 1993, where she was the primary anchor and investigative reporter. She reported on natural disasters such as the Northwest’s most devastating floods and forest fires. She also served as the anchor for coverage of one of the country’s worst high school shootings, the May 1998 tragedy at Thurston High School in Springfield, Oregon, near Eugene. Her coverage of the Thurston High School shootings received an Edward R. Murrow Award for broadcast excellence. After receiving an Edward R. Murrow Award for an investigative series in 2002.
Fletcher accepted a position as the lead investigative reporter and news anchor for Phoenix-based KNXV-TV. She also co-hosted a political talk show on Sunday mornings with veteran newsman Cary Pfeffer. Her undercover reports resulted in the closure of corrupt multimillion-dollar businesses, the arrest of child predators, and the forced accounting of state agencies for millions of dollars in taxpayer money. She also exposed serious security flaws at one of the country’s busiest airports while working undercover. As a result, the TSA’s Federal Security Director was immediately suspended and later replaced. The TSA took over all security checkpoints around the clock and launched a national investigation into the security procedures at all airports. Fletcher’s stories also revealed the presence of lead in poker chips used in the world’s most popular casinos.
She began working as an ABC News correspondent in Los Angeles in 2007. Fletcher was the first to interview high-profile Scientology defector Jenna Miscavige Hill, as part of a full half-hour investigation for Nightline, and exposed abuses at the nation’s largest chimp experimentation facility, prompting a federal investigation. Fletcher has received numerous awards for her investigative reporting, including the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award, multiple Edward R. Murrow Awards, and numerous Emmy Awards. Her work as an investigative journalist has been featured in magazines, newspapers, and a PBS documentary. WJLA hired her as a senior investigative reporter and contributor to Full Measure on April 12, 2016.
