Linda Greenhouse is a legal journalist from the United States who is the Knight Distinguished Journalist in Residence and the Joseph M. Goldstein Lecturer in Law at Yale Law School. She is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who has covered the United States Supreme Court for The New York Times for nearly three decades. She is President of the American Philosophical Society and a Phi Beta Kappa Senate member.

Linda Greenhouse Career

Greenhouse began her 40-year career at The New York Times, where she covered state government in the paper’s Albany bureau. [After receiving a Ford Foundation fellowship to complete her master’s degree, she returned to the Times and covered 29 Supreme Court sessions from 1978 to 2007, with the exception of two years in the mid-1980s when she covered Congress. She has written over 2,800 articles for the New York Times since 1981. She has appeared on the PBS show Washington Week on a regular basis.

Greenhouse accepted an early retirement offer from The New York Times in 2008, at the end of the Supreme Court’s session in the summer of that year. On June 12, 2008, seven of the nine sitting Justices attended Greenhouse’s farewell party. She is still blogging for The New York Times in the “Opinionator” section.

Greenhouse and co-author Reva Siegel published Before Roe v. Wade, a book about the evolution of the abortion debate prior to the 1973 Supreme Court decision. This was primarily a collection of primary documents, with some commentary. In a 2006 speech at Harvard University, Greenhouse criticized US policies and actions at Guantanamo Bay, Abu Ghraib, and Haditha. Greenhouse said in it that she began crying at a Simon & Garfunkel concert a few years ago because her generation had not done a better job of running the country than previous generations.
