Leon Harris Career
Harris began his career as an unpaid intern at CNN’s world headquarters in Atlanta in the early 1980s while finishing his degree. Harris began his career as an entry-level video journalist after graduating in 1983, and later advanced to assistant director of the satellite department as an operator and coordinator. In that capacity, he oversaw and negotiated international and domestic satellite services used to cover breaking news events such as the Persian Gulf War and Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush’s international trips and summits. During the summer of 1991, Harris auditioned for an anchor position; a few months later, he was given a full-time anchor position. At CNN, Harris won numerous awards, including several Emmys for his coverage of the 2000 presidential election.
His most recent position at CNN was as co-anchor of CNN Live Today with Daryn Kagan. In July 2003, Harris agreed to anchor the 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts for ABC affiliate WJLA-TV in Washington, D.C. On October 28, he began his new job. Harris was awarded the 2006 local Emmy for Best Anchor. WJLA declined to renew his contract on September 2, 2016, and his time at the station ended in October of that year. Harris was featured in 2013 for surviving two near-death experiences due to necrotizing pancreatitis. WRC-TV in Washington, D.C., owned by NBC, announced in April 2017 that Harris would join its news team on April 21. He is currently a News 4 co-anchor.
