His involvement with computers began with his first personal computer, an Atari 400. By 1984, he had purchased a Macintosh and was writing a software review for Byte magazine. Laporte has worked on technology-related broadcasting projects such as Dvorak on Computers, which he co-hosted with technology journalist John C. Dvorak in January 1991, and Laporte on Computers, which aired on KGO Radio and KSFO in San Francisco. Laporte won a Northern California Emmy in 1997 for his performance as Dev Null, a motion capture character on the MSNBC show The Site. On the cable and satellite network ZDTV (later TechTV), Laporte produced and co-hosted The Screen Savers and the original version of Call for Help in 1998.

Laporte hosted the daily television show The Lab with Leo Laporte, which was broadcast in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. When it was recorded in the United States and Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the program was known as Call for Help. The series broadcast on G4 Canada, the HOW TO Channel in Australia, numerous Citytv affiliates in Canada, and Google Video. On March 5, 2008, Laporte confirmed on net@nite that Rogers Communications had canceled The Lab with Laporte. Following the cancellation of the show, the HOW TO Channel did not air the remaining episodes. He hosted the weekend technology-oriented talk radio show Laporte: The Tech Guy until December 2022. Laporte appeared on Friday mornings on KFI with Bill Handel, and previously on such shows as Showbiz Tonight, Live with Kelly, and World News Now. He holds an amateur radio license, W6TWT.
