He was selected co-host of Talk of the Town, the station’s long-running and top-rated talk show, in September 2006. In fact, while he was in middle school, he established his own weather station in his backyard.
His career in television news began in Knoxville, first at WTVK-TV (now WVLT) and subsequently at WATE. He was a weather anchor for a long time – and then some. He worked in a variety of positions in Knoxville. During his tenure in Knoxville, Lelan also worked for Black Entertainment Television News. He came to Bristol, Virginia, and WCYB in 1990 to work as a weekend weather anchor/reporter. During his stay in Nashville, Lelan has garnered numerous prizes and honors.
He won a Mid-South regional Emmy award in 2007 for his coverage of the tornadoes that struck the area in April 2006. He’s also been nominated for three Emmys for best weathercast. The Tennessee Associated Press named him Best Weathercaster in the State in 2006. In Reader’s Polls for both the Nashville Scene and The Tennessean, readers voted him their favorite weather anchor. He was named one of Nashville’s Best Dressed Men by readers of The Tennessean and The Nashville News family of publications.
He has been recognized for his work on television and in the community by the Gospel Music City Awards, the TN Lay Organization of the A.M.E. Church, and 4-H. Lelan is still involved in the community. He is a member of 4-H in Tennessee and Davidson County. He also serves on the boards of Cornerstone Financial Credit Union, Northwest YMCA, Middle Tennessee Boy Scouts, Laughter is the Best Medicine, and the Board of Visitors at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville’s College of Communication and Information. This is in addition to speaking to thousands of students throughout Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky each year.
He has previously served on the boards of the Tennessee 4-H Foundation, the University of Tennessee-Knoxville Agriculture Institute, TSU Cooperative Extension, First Steps, and Youth Encouragement Services. Bill Purcell, the former mayor of Metro Nashville, and the Metro Council named him to the Davidson County Agricultural Extension Committee for two years. Lelan is a member of the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association. Both organizations have given him the TV Seal of Approval. He is the president of the Nashville Association of Black Journalists and a member of the 100 Black Men of Middle Tennessee.
