He was a part-time reporter for the Sydney Daily Mirror. From 1969 to 2017, he worked in the Canberra Press Gallery, covering the Australian Parliament and federal elections for print, radio, and television. He was the Melbourne Sun’s Canberra Bureau Chief at the age of 25, and while working for that paper, he began offering political commentary for the TV show Willesee at Seven. He launched The Laurie Oakes Report, a televised political newspaper, in 1978. He joined Network Ten in 1979 and stayed for five years. He has since written on politics for the Melbourne Age and the Sydney Sunday Telegraph. He provided commentary for numerous radio programs. He was able to secure a draft copy of the Australian federal budget.

In 1997, Oakes exploited leaked records to expose parliamentary travel expense misuse, thereby ending the careers of three ministers, several other MPs, and several of their staff. He recently utilized leaked data to prove that the Rudd Government ignored concerns from four major ministries regarding its FuelWatch program. Oakes has been a weekly contributor to a number of Publishing and Broadcasting Limited (PBL)-owned media channels, including the defunct Channel 9 television show, Sunday. He has also worked as a correspondent for Nine News. He contributed a weekly piece to The Bulletin until it discontinued publishing in January 2008. Oakes then retired and continued to write for news.com.au magazines. He stated that he will retire on August 18, 2017.
