Lippman’s book Lady in the Lake was released by William Morrow & Company in 2019. The same-titled miniseries on Apple TV+ was created by Alma Har’el.Two unrelated tragedies in Baltimore in 1969—the murder of 11-year-old Esther Lebowitz and the unexplained death of 33-year-old black woman Shirley Parker—inspired Lippman to write the novel.While employed at The Baltimore Sun, Lippman became aware of the latter death—which went unreported—for the first time.
A bored Jewish housewife decides to become an investigative reporter, so she leaves her husband and relocates to downtown Baltimore. She quickly starts to solve the mystery behind the deaths of a young Jewish girl and a black bartender.The book addresses issues of racism and misogyny in America during the 1960s.
Laura Career
Lippman was a reporter for The Baltimore Sun and the now-defunct San Antonio Light. Her most well-known works are a series of novels involving Tess Monaghan, a reporter turned private investigator, and taking place in Baltimore. The Agatha, Anthony, Edgar, Nero, Gumshoe, and Shamus awards have all been given to Lippman’s novels. Her first novel to appear on the New York Times Best Seller list was What the Dead Know (2007), which also made the Crime Writers’ Association Gold Dagger Award shortlist. Apart from the Tess Monaghan books, a 2014 film featuring Diane Lane was based on Lippman’s book Every Secret Thing. A limited series based on her novel Lady in the Lake was produced for Apple TV.
Lippman writes regularly in the local coffee shop Spoons while residing in the Federal Hill district of South Baltimore. She teaches at Goucher College in Towson, Maryland, which is not far from Baltimore, in addition to being a writer. Lippman gave a lecture at Eckerd College’s Third Annual Writers in Paradise in January 2007. She was the honored guest at Left Coast Crime in March 2013.
In the eighth episode of The Wire’s debut season, the character Bunk is seen reading In a Strange City, one of her books. Lippman played a reporter for the Baltimore Sun newsroom in a sequence that aired in the first episode of The Wire’s final season.
