Rose and Mortimer Julius “Morty” David, a men’s clothing manufacturer, are his parents, and he has an older brother named Ken. David comes from a Jewish family. During the nineteenth century, his father’s family immigrated from Germany to the United States, while David’s mother was born into a Jewish family in Ternopil, now in Ukraine. His German-Jewish great-grandfather from Mobile, Alabama, fought for the Confederacy and owned two enslaved children.

He began taking acting classes in Manhattan. He did various types of jobs to pay his bills while working as a stand-up comedian. For a short time, he worked as a salesman. He then worked as a legal assistant. He was also a cab driver. In 1974, he made his stand-up comedy debut at Folk City in Greenwich Village. He was a writer and actor on ‘Fridays,’ the American Broadcasting Company’s (ABC) weekly late-night live comedy show. He began performing stand-up comedy again. In 1987, he wrote the script for the television film ‘Norman’s Corner.’ In the same year, he also wrote an episode of the American sitcom ‘The Gary Shandling Show.’
He wrote an episode of ‘Seinfeld,’ an American television show that was hugely successful. He appeared in ‘Radio Days,’ a comedy film directed by Woody Allen and released in 1987. He also appeared in ‘New York Stories’ in 1989.
He wrote and directed the comedy film ‘Sour Grapes’ in 1998. Unfortunately, this film did not fare well at the box office. In the same year, he joined the ‘Seinfeld team as an executive producer for the show’s final two seasons.
He also appeared as a guest star on HBO’s comedy series ‘Entourage.’ He appeared on NBC’s ‘The Marriage Ref,’ a television reality show. In 2012, he appeared in the slapstick comedy film ‘The Three Stooges.’
