She originally planned to become an airline pilot, but instead studied in Human Development and Nutrition at Colorado State University (she changed her degree due to her “love and passion for health and fitness”). She began teaching aerobics after graduating in 1995, which led to her participation in the famed Galaxy Fitness competition, and in 2002, she got her Pro Card as an IFBB (International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness) fitness athlete.

She is also a model who competes in beauty pageants and has appeared on numerous magazine covers. She had only been unable to be physically fit and active twice in her life. She was very overweight before she began teaching aerobics because she suffered from depression, which she overcame by exercising.

Later, when training for a fitness competition, she tore her Achilles tendon and had to rest for seven months, during which she became a health and fitness specialist. In season 3, she took over for fellow trainer Jillian Michaels, but in season 4, she competed against her. She did not return for season 5, and she has not appeared since. She later featured as a panelist at the 2008 Miss America competition and wrote a book titled Kim Lyons: Your Body, Your Life.
