Kim Haas Career
For almost 20 years, Haas worked in the media for companies such as Telemundo, where she was marketing director for the Philadelphia station WWSI-TV, and as a pledge host for WYBE-TV. With a Ford Foundation funding, Haas launched a PBS series called Afro-Latino Travels with Kim Haas in 2020. The show showcased Black people’s contributions to Spanish-speaking countries, inspired by a visit to Acapulco, Mexico with her grandmother as a child and her experience studying abroad in Seville, Spain during college, and grew out of her desire to see more Afro-Latino representation on television. While Haas introduced the show to Miami public television in 2009, it took many years for her to acquire funding and tourism boards to sign on.
Anthony Bourdain’s travel series were another source of inspiration for Haas. The show will premiere on September 12, 2020. Its first two episodes, set in San José and Limón, Costa Rica, focused on Jamaican immigrants in the country, particularly their role in the country’s railroad construction. Haas had planned to film future episodes in Brazil this fall in Salvador, Bahia, and Rio de Janeiro, but the COVID-19 outbreak derailed those plans. The third episode, which was shot in Cali, Colombia, is scheduled to debut in 2023. Haas currently resides in Jersey City and owns a communications agency in North Jersey as well as the Afro-Latino culture blog Los Afros Latinos.
