He began his broadcasting career at CHRW radio in London, Ontario, where he was the first news director and worked on Western Mustangs football broadcasts as the University of Western Ontario’s campus station was fully established. In 1981, he got his first job as a reporter for Global Ontario after graduation. He joined CTV as a legislative correspondent in 1986, then in 1988, he joined CBC Television as a reporter and anchor, leading Midday from 1992 to 1994. He also worked as a fill-in anchor on The National. Newman came to ABC News in the United States in 1994, where he hosted ABC World News Now until 1996. He also served as an anchor for ABC World News This Morning and as a correspondent for World News Tonight.
Following the resignation of Elizabeth Vargas, ABC News appointed Newman as Good Morning America’s newsreader in June 1997. He was chosen co-anchor of Good Morning America with Lisa McRee in May 1998. The show’s ratings continued to suffer, and both McRee and Newman were reassigned to other reporting duties within ABC in January 1999, with Newman becoming a correspondent for Nightline and a substitute anchor for Peter Jennings and Carole Simpson on both the weeknight and Sunday editions of World News Tonight. Global Television started Global National in 2001, and Newman returned home to serve as its first anchor and executive editor.
In 2005 and 2006, Newman won the Gemini Award for Best News Anchor. In 2007, Newman, along with Kenton Boston, Doriana Temolo, Marc Riddell, and Jason Keel from Global National, received the Gemini Award for Best Newscast. NewMan Media Ltd. was founded by Newman. Newman announced his resignation from Global Television in April 2010, effective August 30, 2010. On July 13, 2010, Dawna Friesen was announced as his successor, and she made her on-air debut on September 20, 2010. Newman was appointed to the board of directors of Communitech, an organization that represents technology companies in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, in 2011. CTV News announced in August 2012 that Newman would become the anchor of Question Period and a frequent contributor to its investigative series W5.
Newman is also a ‘Digital News Evangelist’ for Bell Media. CTV News announced in August 2013 that Newman would anchor a new prime-time show on CTV News Channel called Kevin Newman Live, which would launch on November 18, 2013. Seven months later, the show was canceled. Newman joined CTV National News as a fill-in anchor in late 2014, and in September 2016 was designated host and managing editor of the weekly investigative show W5. Newman departed from network television in September 2019 and now runs his own company, Kevin Newman Ideas, which creates TV shows, specials, and documentaries.
