O’Connor studied acting at DePaul University’s The Theatre School before making his film debut as high school rebel and beatnik poet Michael Fitzsimmons in Francis Ford Coppola’s Peggy Sue Got Married (1986). In the HBO miniseries Tanner ’88, he played the perplexed newspaper reporter Taggerty Hayes. He played a young Ernest Hemingway in The Moderns in 1988, a small role in Steel Magnolias in 1989, and a featured role in Color of Night, an erotic thriller starring Bruce Willis and Jane March in 1994. On the 1998 science-fiction adventure Deep Rising, O’Connor collaborated with writer/director Stephen Sommers.

He later appeared in Sommers’ films The Mummy, in which he played the untrustworthy and materialistic Beni; Van Helsing, in which he played Count Dracula’s devious servant (and Dr. Frankenstein’s former assistant) Igor; and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, in which he played Doctor Mindbender. In There Will Be Blood, O’Connor played Henry, the “brother” of Daniel Day-Lewis’ oil man, Daniel Plainview. O’Connor also appeared in John Candy’s final film, Canadian Bacon, as Roy Boy, a suicidal, eccentric American bent on destroying Canada. He reteamed with Paul Thomas Anderson, the director of There Will Be Blood, for a small role in The Master.
