Baker’s debut book, Sometimes You See It Coming (1993), a modern baseball story largely based on Ty Cobb’s biography, was published in 1993. He was the primary historical researcher for Harold Evans’s (1998) illustrated history of the United States, The American Century. From 1998 to 2007, he was a “In the News” columnist for American Heritage magazine. In 2009, he appeared on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal and The Colbert Report to discuss President Barack Obama. Baker is the author of HarperCollins’ City of Fire trilogy, which includes the historical books Dreamland (1998), the best-selling Paradise Alley (2002), and Strivers Row (2006). The trilogy’s middle volume was awarded the James Fenimore Cooper Prize for Best Historical Fiction in 2003.
Paradise Alley was also chosen as a Today show book club option by bestselling Angela’s Ashes author Frank McCourt. He wrote Luna Park, a comic novel illustrated by Croatian artist Danijel eelj, in 2009. Baker, who has written over 200 newspaper and magazine articles, was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship in nonfiction in 2017. Baker is a contributing editor and bi-monthly columnist for Harper’s Magazine as well as a regular contributor to Politico.com, The New Republic, The New York Times, and The New York Times Book Review.
