Since February 16, 1998, Bruce’s show has featured PopMaster. It provides a smart speaker for completing the Three-in-Ten bonus round successfully with questions set by music expert Phil Swern. Bruce’s first broadcasts were from Scotland when he took over the presentation of Radio 2 Ballroom from Scotland following the death of David Findlay, Radio Scotland’s announcer/presenter of Scottish Dance Music programs. From November 1980 until 1982, he hosted regular Ballroom shows on Radio 2. He became a Radio 2 stand-in presenter, mostly filling in for Ray Moore on the Early Show. Bruce also hosted broadcasts from London for Radio Scotland. Bruce joined Radio 2 as a regular presenter in January 1984, hosting the Saturday late-night show in addition to his ongoing show on Radio Scotland.
Bruce left Radio Scotland in January 1985 to take over The Radio 2 Breakfast Show from Terry Wogan, before being succeeded by Derek Jameson in April 1986. He subsequently started his first stint on the mid-morning program, which he did until the end of March 1990, when he took over the late show until the end of the year. He then hosted the early program throughout 1991, before returning to the mid-morning slot on January 6, 1992.
On 17 January 2023, Bruce stated that he would be departing BBC Radio 2 in March of that year to pursue other options, including anchoring a new mid-morning program for Greatest Hits Radio, replacing Mark Goodier.
