Kelly McCreary Career
McCreary lived in Harlem and worked part-time at Barnard’s alumnae affairs office while auditioning for and performing in plays. McCreary effectively quit acting and moved to Spain, where she worked on a farm, frustrated by her lack of success in television and film at the time, as well as disappointment with her stage work. However, McCreary returned to the stage when Dominique Morisseau’s play Follow Me to Nellie’s, which she had previously workshopped, was produced. “In that tough time, before I quit acting, that was one of the few creative things that had made me really happy,” McCreary later reflected. Then it was given a stage production. So I was like, “I’ll totally do this again.”
McCreary made her television debut in 2005 on the PBS animated series Cyberchase, and she later appeared on another PBS animated series, The Electric Company. Her Broadway debut was in the 2008 musical Passing Strange. McCreary also appeared on the USA Network series White Collar. She landed a lead role in the Off-Broadway musical comedy Perfect Harmony in 2010. She made her feature film debut as Inez in the 2011 film Being Flynn. She landed her first major role in 2012, playing Tyra Dupre, a first-year surgical intern who is also a lesbian, on The CW’s Emily Owens, M.D., alongside Mamie Gummer and Aja Naomi King.
McCreary has also appeared on the TV shows Castle, I Just Want My Pants Back, and Rubicon. She played Eartha Kitt in the indie film Life, alongside Dane DeHaan and Robert Pattinson, and she also appeared in the films Baby Baby Baby and How to Follow Strangers. Her other stage credits include the Merrimack Repertory Theater’s Secret Order and the Williamstown Theatre Festival’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Eurydice. After appearing as Clare Tucker in two episodes of Shonda Rhimes’ political drama Scandal, McCreary joined Rhimes’ other ABC drama series, Grey’s Anatomy, in 2014. McCreary made her debut in the tenth season’s penultimate episode, “Everything I Try, Nothing Seems to Turn Out Right.”
She continued to recur on the show, and on October 23, 2014, after appearing in four episodes of the eleventh season, McCreary was promoted to series regular. McCreary has appeared in the crossover episodes “Under the Surface” and “Always Ready” from the second season, “I’ll Be Seeing You” from the third season, and “We Build Then We Break” from the sixth season of the spin-off series Station 19. During her Grey’s Anatomy hiatus in 2017, McCreary starred in a production of the play Intimate Apparel as Esther Mills. McCreary was cast as Dot, one of the main characters in the Netflix animated series Harvey Street Kids, in 2018. The show debuted on June 29, 2018.
In 2018, McCreary also produced a short film titled A Cohort of Guests, which starred several of her Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 co-stars and reunited with Morisseau to play Shanita in the Geffen Playhouse production of the playwright’s Skeleton Crew. On March 17, 2023, it was announced that McCreary, who first appeared on Grey’s Anatomy in the tenth season as Dr. Maggie Pierce, would be leaving the show as a series regular after the fourteenth episode of the nineteenth season, “Shadow of Your Love,” which aired on April 13, 2023. It was also revealed that, like Pompeo, she would appear as a guest in the season’s final episode.
