In 2006, Underwood started working as a sports reporter for Ten News and Sports Tonight at Network 10. She took over for Christi Malthouse as a boundary rider when she joined Network Ten’s coverage of the AFL in 2009.

By joining Tim Lane in providing commentary for the 2009 NAB Cup match between Geelong and the Adelaide Crows, Underwood became the first woman to call an AFL match on television. She made history. Her first AFL premiership season match was the Round 16 match between Geelong and Melbourne at Kardinia Park on July 18, 2009, with Anthony Hudson as her co-caller.
