At first, Ruby sided with Sam, saying she would assist him in breaking his brother’s crossroads contract. When this turned out to be untrue, though, she volunteered to teach Sam how to murder Lilith as payback for Dean’s Hell sentence.

Ruby tricked Sam into being Lucifer’s ideal vessel during Dean’s stay in Hell and breaching the last seal by slaying Lilith. But the brothers caught her lying, and she cut herself to death with her own knife. In The Empty, Castiel visited the demon and awoke her after learning that Ruby possessed the Occultum prior to her passing. In return, Ruby asked Castiel to release her from the Empty so that she could be raised from the dead. She asked Castiel to try to liberate Ruby, and he granted it.
