Tappen was born on April 9, 1981 in Morristown, New Jersey. He also plays golf, tennis and runs cross country. During his senior year at Vera-Walsh Academy High School, Tappen focused on track and field and eventually earned an academic and athletic scholarship to attend Rutgers University. Tappen studied journalism at Rutgers and was a member of the cross country and track teams until graduating in 2003.
After starting work in college sports television, Tappen joined WJAR in Providence, Rhode Island, where he served as the weekend and sports day announcer. . From there he moved to New England Sports Network (NESN). Tappen joined the NHL Network in 2011 to host “NHL Tonight” before moving to NBC in the summer of 2014. Tappen received the “Women of Inspiration” award from the Boston Women’s Sports and Activities Division in 2014. He has twice been nominated for a New England Emmy Award for sports broadcasting and won an Associated Press Award in 2006 for his show “Swim Meet.”
