Born in St. Louis, Madigan grew up in Florissant, Missouri, where she received her early education at private Catholic schools. After graduating from McCluer North High School in 1983, Madigan acknowledged that she worked at a steakhouse rather than going to prom or constructing floats. In 1988, Madigan graduated with a B.A. in journalism from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where she oversaw the student newspaper and worked as an intern with the professional ice hockey team, the St. Louis Blues.

Madigan Career
Madigan began his career in print media, working for the Missouri Athletic Club’s publications department and the Suburban Journals newspapers in the St. Louis area. She also did stand-up at “open mic” events at local comedy clubs in the St. Louis region. She attributes her encouragement to pursue a career in comedy to her father Jack. Her increasing success at these events quickly led to The Funny Bone, a national chain of comedy clubs, offering her a paid stand-up position. Madigan quit her jobs in Missouri in exchange for a thirty-week booking of guaranteed dates. She lists Lewis Black, Ron White, and Richard Jeni as some of her early comedy club influences.
Madigan has been on a number of TV shows and specials, including Celebrity Poker Showdown, I Love the ’80s 3-D, I Love the 90s: Part Deux, and Last Comic Standing. She also starred in a Comedy Central Presents special and her own half-hour comedy special on HBO. She has previously been on The Bob and Tom Show, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and Late Show with David Letterman. In addition, she is the host of the Blue Collar Comedy radio show on Sirius XM Radio. Along with other comedians, Madigan has twice taken part in USO performances in support of US troops, traveling to both Iraq and Afghanistan.
