Armsden worked as a police and court reporter for The Bulletin magazine on the Gold Coast from 1992 until 1995. During this time, Armsden received two Golden Quill Awards: Best News Story (Print) and Golden Quill Journalist of the Year. Armsden began his career in television news reporting in 1996 when he joined Channel Nine’s Gold Coast News service as a crime correspondent. Armsden relocated to London in 1999 to work for Sky News Online. In the year 2000, he began working for CNN worldwide, where he covered worldwide athletic events and interviewed sports personalities.

Armsden returned to Australia in October 2010 to work as an anchor for Fox Sports News. He left the network after six months to work on Channel Nine’s A Current Affair. In 2012, he made national headlines when he discovered evidence regarding controversial MP Craig Thomson. Despite completing a statutory declaration, Armsden questioned a former prostitute who claimed to be one of Thomson’s clients. She later retracted her account. In 2014, he discovered con artist Peter Foster’s hiding place and reported on his arrest.
