Judy Career
Graubart was a member of the comedy troupe Second City, and from the mid-1960s on, he played the main role of the troupe with comedians such as Fred Willard, Peter Boyle, Richard Libertini, Bob Dishy, and Chicago’s Robert Klein. He was also a regular on CBS’s Comedy Tonight in the summer of 1970, appearing on the air with Jerry Lacey, along with Peter Boyle, Barbara Carson, Madeleine Kahn, and Robert Clay. Graubart made his uncredited debut in Arthur Hiller’s 1967 kidnapping comedy The Tiger Makes Out, playing a portable umbrella that mailman Eli Wallach tries to steal. He lassos a fire hydrant. Graubart’s “Second City” actor Bob Dishy plays the husband of Wallach’s kidnapping victim, Anne Jackson. Graubart portrayed hundreds of characters on Fire Company during its first six-year run, with Jungle Jennifer being one of her most famous.
After working on The Electric Company, she appeared in several films in the 1980s, including Simon, directed by Marshall Brickman, and The Author!, starring Apacino. In 1999, she reunited with Madeleine Kahn for the film Judy Berlin, which was completed shortly before Kahn’s death. Throughout her career, Graubart was also a familiar face in television commercials for products such as the Chevrolet Vega, Cheer, Crunch ‘n Munch, Shake ‘n Bake, and Miracle Whip. Graubart, like many other former members of The Electric Company, appears in interviews and retellings of the second Great Electric Company DVD box set, released by Scream! Factory and Sony BMG Music Entertainment, on November 14, 2006. Graubart also acted in theater, appearing in the off-Broadway production of “Orphans” at the Steppenwolf Theatre in 1986.
