There were many social and political upheavals going on when he started teaching at San Francisco State University. El Tecolote arose as a result of this social engagement. He founded the publication after teaching a La Raza Studies class. The last assignment for the class was to construct a multilingual newspaper in both Spanish and English. He was the organization’s founder and initial editor. It was released on August 24, 1970. El Tecolote, which translates as “The Owl” in English, was given to it in Spanish. Its characteristic emblem is a wise owl. A year later, the daily relocated from its collegiate setting to the Mission District.

He taught journalism at San Francisco State University for fifteen years as an instructor. He offered the first college-level course on Hispanic journalism, dubbed La Raza Journalism, here. He then went on to become a journalism educator at City College of San Francisco, where he eventually became chair of the Department of Journalism. In addition to teaching, he has worked as a publisher, editor, reporter, and columnist. He worked as a reporter for United Press International and the Associated Press in the 1970s and 1980s. He still helps out with the administration of El Tecolote on occasion, offering guidance, acting as the newspaper’s public face, and looking for resources.

KGO-TV honored him with a Heroes of Excellence Award. He received the Society of Professional Journalists’ Distinguished Service Award in 2000. He was elected into the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Hall of Fame in 2009 for his contributions to journalism and the advancement of Latinos in journalism. Horace Mann Middle School had him represented in a mural on the outside of a wall in 2011. He accepted a certificate of appreciation from Mayor Ed Lee in March 2015 for his 45 years of work as a publisher, journalism teacher, and department chair of journalism.
