She is best recognized for her roles in the Disney Channel sitcom Jessie and the 2013 ABC comedy series Back in the Game. Totah garnered positive reviews for her performance in the 2016 film Other People. She appeared in the short-lived NBC comedy series Champions in 2018. Totah began her career performing male characters, but in August 2018, she publicly came out as a trans woman, changing her first name to Josie. Beginning in 2013, she starred in the Disney Channel Original Series Jessie as Stuart Wooten, a youngster who has a crush on series regular Zuri Ross. Totah was also cast as a supporting character in the ABC sitcom Back in the Game in 2013. In 2015, she was cast as the youngest member of the New Directions in four episodes of Glee’s sixth season. Totah featured in the film Other People in 2016, and gained critical acclaim for her performance, earning her the title of Variety’s Sundance Breakout Star of the Year. Totah was due to produce alongside executive producers Adam and Naomi Scott in a new comedy for NBC that she helped conceive, according to Deadline Hollywood in October 2016. She starred in the Netflix detective comedy Handsome: A Netflix Mystery Movie and the Marvel Studios blockbuster Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017.

Totah appeared in the Disney feature film Magic Camp with Adam Devine in January 2017. Totah was cast in February 2017 as Michael Patel, Mindy Kaling’s character Priya Patel’s son, in the new NBC comedy Champions,  which was picked up to series in May 2017, and ran from March 8 to May 25, 2018, before being canceled.  Totah was cast in a Saved by the Bell spinoff for NBC’s Peacock streaming service, where she played Lexi, a socially powerful cheerleader.
