Szeps hosted and served as a co-executive producer of Australian Idol Backstage, the show’s behind-the-scenes component. Szeps worked as a script assistant on the comedy television series BackBerner in 2000 after graduating from college. He also contributed to the production of two Australian radio stations, 2SM and 2GB. In 2003, Szeps was recruited by Mike Carlton of 2UE, a business radio broadcast in Sydney, Australia. Szeps created “John Howard’s Diary,” a radio soliloquy for 2UE, in which he imitated the Australian prime minister’s thoughts on the previous week.
Szeps shared with The Sydney Morning Messenger in 2003 that “in the event that John Howard wasn’t in power, it’s not too difficult to imagine my life would be heading down something else entirely”. After John Howard was crushed in the 2007 Australian government political race, Szeps’ radio farce became “Kevin Rudd’s Journal”, a parody of the new State head in a similar organization. Szeps was the maker of Never Newsreel, a week by week partnered mocking radio sketch that ran until June 2008.
