His father, Dr. Humberto Garcia, is a native of Chile, and his mother, Dora Mesa, is a professor originally from Cuba. Growing up in Orange County, California’s San Juan Capistrano, he attended San Clemente High School. In high school, he wrestled and earned the moniker “Baby-Faced Killer”.
He was chosen as the faculty’s “Triton of the Year” as a senior, which is the greatest honor bestowed upon a departing senior. Garcia majored in communication studies and graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1995. He attended the Beverly Hills Playhouse acting school to further his acting studies.

On the ABC series Lost, Garcia portrayed Hugo “Hurley” Reyes, an unfortunate lottery winner. Hurley assists the group in rationing food and water from the plane while tending to Claire, who is pregnant. In an attempt to defuse the tension, he builds a golf course and finds the cursed numbers (4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42). Rousseau, who he finds, tells him the numbers brought her to the island. Rousseau shows the camp where the Black Rock, a sunken slave ship, is and warns the Others about it. Hurley places the blame for Arzt’s passing on himself and bad luck.
Hurley brings Rose to assist and is brought into the hatch to examine the food stockpile. Rose talks him out of using the dynamite to blow up the food.Hurley and Libby become close, but Sawyer finds out about Hurley’s hidden food supply and uses intimidation to get him to find a tree frog. Together, they demolish the cache. While in a coma, Hurley assists Michael in freeing his kid from the Others. Hurley confronts Michael and Jack for bringing them on a mission after being revealed as a traitor. Hurley is freed after the Others ambush them.
When Hurley and his pals Sawyer, Jin, and Charlie run into Desmond, he brings up a Locke speech about saving Sawyer, Jack, and Kate. They make plans to intoxicate Desmond since they think he has psychic abilities.As they try to restore the ancient Dharma Initiative van they find, Hurley magically breaks his curse and gets it started.Hurley thinks Sawyer is the camp’s new leader until Jack returns after they find Nikki and Paulo. Naomi is discovered hanging from a tree, so they hide her in Hurley’s cover. They discover Jack’s scheme to stop other people from kidnapping. Hurley offers to go with them, but they turn down his assistance. After killing an Other by driving the van onto the beach, Sawyer and Juliet have more time to handle the other victims.
