Career

June 2001, I began working as a copywriter for a New York advertising firm. At night and on weekends, Carlos performed stand-up comedy. Carlos eventually abandoned advertising in favor of stand-up comedy, however he believes he had difficulty finding a specialized audience since he “wasn’t a stereotypical black man”.  He began to use that quality as the foundation for many of his jokes. On The Colbert Report, Carlos played Alan, presenter Stephen Colbert’s “black friend”. Whenever Colbert discussed racial issues, he frequently requested that a photo of himself with his African-American coworker Alan be presented on television. Colbert occasionally addressed him as “Alan, my black friend Alan”. Alan initially appeared in a Martin Luther King Day presentation.
