He formerly worked as a correspondent for The Wall Street Journal (1997-2005), where he covered accounting and finance. From 1995 to 1997, he worked as a reporter for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Weil was a Gerald Loeb Award finalist in 2002 and received the Excellence in Financial Journalism Award from the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. In 2009 and 2010, he received the Society of American Business Editors and Writers’ Best in Business Journalism Award.
In 2011, he received the Society of the Silurians Award for Editorial Writing/Commentary. Weil has been praised by Columbia Journalism Review, Barron’s, and The New Yorker magazine, among others, for being the first writer to question Enron’s accounting techniques during the Internet boom, for his September 20, 2000, WSJ article, “Energy Traders Cite Gains, But Some Math Is Missing” In 2007 and 2008, he wrote for Bloomberg on problematic accounting methods at Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Wachovia, Washington Mutual, Lehman Brothers, AIG, Citigroup, and IndyMac.
