Following the September 11th terrorist attacks, John joined the California National Guard troops on a mission to guard and protect US military installations in the Middle East. He won an Emmy in 1995 for his coverage of the Tank Rampage in San Diego, and another in 1996 for his coverage of the Harmony Grove Wildfires in San Diego.
