John Beard Career
Beard worked as an anchor at KNBC-TV from 1981 to 1993. Tritia Toyota, Kristie Wilde, Kelly Lange, and Linda Alvarez were among Beard’s co-anchors at KNBC. He also hosted NBC News Digest segments in the Pacific Time Zone during primetime. Beard left KNBC in November 1993 and began working for KTTV the following month. Beard’s refusal to read misleading news teases and celebrity stories (particularly about pop singer Michael Jackson) was one of the reasons for his departure. At the time of his departure, Beard was the 4 PM anchor of Channel 4 News, and he was replaced by former KABC-TV personality Chuck Henry. From December 1993 to September 2007, he co-anchored the 10 p.m. newscast at KTTV in Los Angeles with Christine Devine.
Beard resigned from KTTV in December 2007. According to his personal website, he was fired despite the station’s highest ratings in its history, after years of increasing editorial disagreements with station management, whose audience market research was steering it toward increasingly unsubstantial journalism and celebrity fluff.[5] Carlos Amezcua, a former KTLA Morning News anchor, took over for Beard. Beard returned to Buffalo in 2009 and started anchoring Channel 2 News Daybreak and Midday on WGRZ, an NBC affiliate owned by Tegna Inc. While anchoring WGRZ’s morning newscast, Daybreak, she soared to the top of Buffalo’s Nielsen ratings. On November 1, 2016, John Beard announced his departure from WGRZ. Beard stayed for more than a year, with his final newscast airing on January 18, 2018. He has appeared as himself and newscaster roles in television series including the 1994 animated series Spider-Man, 24, and Arrested Development (on which he made twenty-four appearances as himself, including the fourth and fifth seasons, which were filmed after he relocated to Buffalo).
