Him being well recognized for his role as Joey Russo in Blossom and Joey Longo in Melissa & Joey, he is best known for getting his star as a child star in the early 1980s. Joseph also starred in Gimme a Break, and the series Brotherly Love with the real-life brothers Mathew and Andrew.

On acting, his first acting role was in a Cracker Jack commercial. That was at the age of five, when he also appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, where he performed the song Give My Regards to Broadway. Lawrence won the role of Joey Donovan on the hit NBC sitcom Gimme a Break in 1983, after him appearing in a guest spots on Different Strokes and Silver Spoons. The role he won for, the actor continued playing it until the series ended in 1987. As a protagonist in the 1988 Disney film Oliver & Company, Joey provided the voice of Oliver at the age of 12. From 1991 to 1995, at the age of 15, the star co-starred in the hit TV series Blossom on NBC, playing Joey Russo.
As the series Brotherly Love is famously known to be featured by his real life brothers, he also starred in it. In 2006, the Joey Donovan role player appeared on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. Paired with professional dancer Edyta Sliwinska, he placed third in the competition. Then in May 2007, he starred in the Broadway hit Chicago as Billy Flynn.
