Joey Diaz is a stand-up comedian, actor, podcaster, and author. After pursuing stand-up comedy full-time in Colorado and Seattle in 1991, Diaz moved to Los Angeles in 1995 and began acting, landing roles in My Name Is Earl, The Longest Yard, Spider-Man 2, Grudge Match, and The Many Saints of Newark.

Diaz, a comic, began performing blue humor after seeing the 1988 film Punchline. He worked as a doorman at Wit’s End before debuting his first routine in 1991 at Denver’s Comedy Works. In 1992, he used cocaine before performing, which he eventually quit doing. Diaz won the Beck’s Amateur Comedy Competition and went on to compete in another similar competition in Seattle, Washington. In 1994, he enrolled in the Comedy Works’ comic development program, which included group writing sessions and club sets.

Diaz left Colorado for Los Angeles, California in 1995, motivated by his divorce from his first wife and the lack of touch with their daughter. He performed at North Bergen in 2007 to raise funds for the North Bergen High School basketball team’s outfits. In 2012, he released his stand-up special, It’s Either You or the Priest, which debuted at number one on the Billboard comedy charts in the UK and Canada, as well as on iTunes. Diaz’s debut one-hour comedy special, Sociably Unacceptable, was published in December 2016 through on-demand subscription services Seeso and Comedy Dynamics.

Diaz met comedian Felicia Michaels in 2009, who inspired him to co-host a new comedy podcast. Beauty and the Beast debuted in August 2010. Diaz told a story about lighting fire to a prostitute’s wig when he was younger in an early episode. Attendance at Diaz’s stand-up concerts soared the weekend after it aired. After 113 episodes, the podcast came to an end in November 2012.

Diaz created his own podcast, The Church of What’s Happening Now, on September 2, 2012, which he co-hosted with producer and sidekick Lee Syatt. Diaz named it after a statement said to him by his previous manager while he was selling vehicles in Boulder. Episodes were released on numerous audio-only podcast sites, as well as an audio+video version on YouTube, where they amassed over 500,000 subscribers.

Diaz debuted a new podcast series, Uncle Joey’s Joint, on October 5, 2020, after returning to New Jersey from California. Lee Syatt, Diaz’s old producer and sidekick, is a recurrent guest on the relaunched podcast but is no longer the show’s producer.
