Joe Mimran House
Mimran achieved “there” in his 4,500-square-foot Forest Hill home by keeping the fixtures simple and enabling his enormous collection of contemporary art and antique curiosities to shine. The end effect is a residence that exudes originality and flair while remaining tastefully restrained—just like the man himself.
Joe Mimran Club Monaco
Mimran had a new company idea by the mid-1980s and was ready to take the lead on design. He decided to make one because he couldn’t find a plain, white cotton shirt. Club Monaco was created by the newly formed Monaco Group as a range of minimalist necessities. Mimran was in charge of this new brand, while Saul concentrated on the Alfred Sung business.
Mimran chose to create his own shop after The Bay and Eaton’s department shops both passed on the collection, partially because they did not comprehend the basic, unisex style. Club Monaco chose a location on Queen Street West in Toronto, where it offered everything from jackets to underwear in a 5,000-square-foot (460 m2) shop. A teaser campaign preceded the store’s opening, and there was a line on opening day in September 1985.
The company went public in 1986, then back private in 1989, with Dylex as a partner. In 1995, a flagship store on Fifth Avenue in New York City opened, which is still in operation today. During the 1990s recession, the business slowed its expansion and shifted its color pallet to neutrals such as black and white. The cost-cutting idea resulted in a startling rebirth of the label.
Caban, a lifestyle store based on the clean Club Monaco aesthetic, was founded by Mimran in 1999. The company became public again in 1996. Club Monaco had 125 locations in Canada, the United States, Japan, and South Korea by 1999. The Polo Ralph Lauren Corp. bought Club Monaco and Caban the same year. Mimran continued on as president and CEO to see the company through the changeover, but then left to work on other initiatives.
