Career

After graduating from college, Ms. Xie worked as a corporate lawyer for 3 years, from 2006 to 2009. In 2014, she took on the role of Head of Corporate Events at Magnet Theatre. He won the Comedy Rising Star Award at the Asian American Television and Film Festival in 2017,  and made his debut on Comedy Central in 2018.

In a video from a performance at the Comedy Cellar in New York City on June 7, 2023, Chia interacts with the audience during the morning show and recalls the impact of Malaysia’s evacuation of Singapore and the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. It went viral on social networks. The clip was subject to heavy criticism from Malaysian citizens, celebrities, representatives and politicians, who deemed it “bad” or “blasphemous”. TikTok removed it for “violating community standards and displaying racist content.” One hundred protesters from the United Malays National Organization (UMNO) protested Shea’s performance in front of the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and demanded that he be banned from entering Malaysia. While Malaysian actor Jason Leong supported Chia’s approach, which was condemned by some, Harith Iskander urged other viewers to be careful as their content could easily be taken out of context. Singaporean artist Kumar also criticized Chia. Singapore’s ambassador to Malaysia apologized on his behalf. Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan condemned Chia’s joke.

Chia said that the clips did not have the necessary content, that the clip was prepared as a short film for advertising purposes and that it had been played in cinemas for more than a year and a half, so there was no problem. The following day, the Royal Malaysian Police (RMP) said they would contact Interpol to find Cheah’s identity and whereabouts, but did not provide further details. Speaking to the BBC, Xie added that the response to his joke in Malaysia was incredible and made him even more famous. Although RMP requested Interpol, Interpol told CNA on June 14, 2023 that Malaysia had not requested assistance. His spokesman stated that the request for assistance must “be in accordance with Interpol’s laws prohibiting religious, ethnic, military and political reasons” and added: “All allegations regarding freedom of expression regarding crimes will also be investigated.”
