Joanna Newsom Have One on Me

Newsom’s third studio album, Have One on Me, was released on February 23, 2010 on Drag City as the official follow-up to the harpist’s highly praised second studio album, Ys, from 2006. It is a triple album that she produced and mixed with long-time colleagues Jim O’Rourke and Noah Georgeson, with Ryan Francesconi providing the accompanying arrangements. Have One on Me maintains Newsom’s use of cryptic, pastoral lyrics, as well as a progression of components of her style such as orchestral accompaniment and arrangements, which include different instruments such as the tambura, harpsichord, and kaval.

In certain tracks, the production flirts with genres like jazz and blues, while others have drums and an electric guitar. The CD is also her first since The Milk-Eyed Mender to feature songs performed on piano rather than the harp. Due to health issues, Newsom’s voice was injured during the sessions, which hampered the overall recording process and forced the harpist to adjust her singing technique.

Joanna Newsom The Milk-Eyed Mender

Drag City signed Newsom and released her debut album, The Milk-Eyed Mender, in 2004. Shortly after, Newsom toured alongside Devendra Banhart and Vetiver to promote the record, including an early appearance at the Green Man Festival in Wales. The documentary The Family Jams, released in 2011, focused on the tour. In December 2004, she played at Drag City’s “It’s a Wonderful Next Life” Christmas party alongside Smog and Weird War. She also appeared as a guest musician on Vetiver’s self-titled album in 2004 and Vashti Bunyan’s Lookaftering the following year. The music “Sprout and the Bean” appeared in the 2008 horror thriller The Strangers.

As of 2010, The Milk-Eyed Mender had sold 200,000 copies, helping her establish an underground following. Music historian John Morrish described the album as a “neo-folk benchmark” in 2007, while NME ranked it as the 12th best folk album of all time.
