James Rash is an American actor, comedian, screenwriter, and director known for his role on the NBC sitcom Community, for which he received a Critics’ Choice Television Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2012.

He appeared as Dave, the self-proclaimed “cool” Mayor of Crystal Cove in the American adult animated comedy mystery television series Velma. The series serves as an alternate universe origin narrative for Mystery Inc., billed as a “love quadrangle” between them. It mostly follows Velma Dinkley as she attempts to unravel a mystery involving her mother’s abduction and the killings of local adolescent girls. The series debuted on January 12, 2023. A second season debuted on April 25, 2024. Critics gave Velma mixed reviews, praising the voice acting and animation while criticizing the humor, meta narrative, characters, screenplay, and changes from the typical Scooby-Doo style. The audience response was largely negative.
Career
In addition to Fenton on That ’70s Show and That ’90s Show, Rash portrayed Andrew the “whore house guy” on Reno 911! and Mr. Grayson/Stitches in the 2005 movie Sky High. He played Head T.A. Philip in Slackers and had an appearance in the Friends season finale. Rash played Craig Pelton, the dean of the community college where the show is set, on Community from 2009 to 2015.
In 2005, Rash and his comedic partner Nat Faxon ventured into filmmaking, penning a pilot for the unpopular series Adopted. Based on the same-named novel that was included in the 2008 Black List (the most well-liked unproduced screenplays in Hollywood at the time), they penned the screenplay for The Descendants (2011). The film debuted to critical acclaim, earning a Golden Globe nomination and the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Rash and Faxon co-wrote and directed The Way Way Back (2013), which premiered to a standing ovation at the Sundance Film Festival. Parts of the film are based on Rash’s teenage years. The ensemble comedy starring Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Allison Janney, Maya Rudolph, and Sam Rockwell. The film was a commercial and critical success, and it received a Critics’ Choice Movie Award nomination for Best Comedy.
In 2020, Rash and Faxon reunited for Downhill, an adaption of Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund’s film Force Majeure (2014). The film stars Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Rash and Faxon co-wrote the screenplay with Jesse Armstrong. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and garnered mixed reviews, with critics comparing it to the original.
Rash has played the Marquess of Queensbury in all four seasons of the Adult Swim animated sitcom Mike Tyson Mysteries. From 2017 to 2021, he voiced Gyro Gearloose in the DuckTales remake. on 2023, Rash played the Fixer, a Conglomerate enforcer and recurrent role on My Dad the Bounty Hunter. He also appeared as a video game commentator in the same series.
