Jim Gardner is an American news anchor working for WPVI-TV, based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Gardner has been guiding Action News viewers through every major and minor news event since 1976.

Jim Gardner Career

Gardner earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Columbia University in 1970. He got his first taste of broadcast journalism there. He covered the “Historic Student Riots” at Columbia University for the university’s radio station, WKCR-FM, in 1968. Gardner began working as a desk assistant, writer, and producer for 1010 WINS in New York City in 1970.

Gardner began working as a reporter for WFAS radio in White Plains, New York, in 1972, and quickly rose to the position of News Director. He began his television broadcasting career two years later at WKBW-TV in Buffalo, New York.

Gardner has been employed by WPVI in Philadelphia since June 1, 1976. He currently anchors the weekday newscasts at 6:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., which he has done since May 11, 1977. Since 1980, he has covered every Democratic and Republican presidential convention, and he has interviewed every president and major presidential candidate. Gardner was named Person of the Year by the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia in 1996, and he was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2003.

Jim values his community involvement and the opportunities he has to give back to a variety of organizations. He is especially proud that every year since 1987, one Temple University broadcast journalism student has received the Jim Gardner Scholarship to help pay for his or her education.
