Is Jim Donovan still on Channel 3? – Career

Following the death of WKYC weeknight sports anchor Jim Graner in 1976, the Channel 3 sports director position became something of a “revolving door,” with at least six replacements (including Don Schroeder, Tom Ryther, Joe Pelligrino, Jim Mueller, and Wayland Boot) coming and going over the next decade – until Donovan, who had joined the station in 1985 as a weekend sports anchor, finally took over in 1986. Since then, he has retained the position.

The Cleveland Browns’ local television rights were purchased by station 3 and SportsTime Ohio (now known as Bally Sports Great Lakes) in 2006. Donovan presents various Browns-themed programs on BSGL in addition to his duties on WKYC. From 1987 through 1997, Donovan worked as a play-by-play announcer for NBC Sports’ NFL coverage. He also worked for NBC as a play-by-play announcer for the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics, as well as the 1994 World Cup Soccer.

When the Cleveland Browns returned to the NFL in 1999, Donovan was chosen as the team’s radio play-by-play announcer. Donovan was the play-by-play announcer for the Cleveland Indians from 2006 to 2008, after WKYC obtained the local, over-the-air television rights to the team. Donovan increased his responsibilities at WKYC on January 16, 2012, when he became the anchor of Channel 3’s 7 p.m. broadcast. At 6 and 11 p.m., he continues to work as a sports anchor.
