Jerrod Carmichael Career
In fifth grade, he conducted a morning news broadcast for his elementary school’s local access channel. He attended Robert B. Glenn High School in Kernersville, North Carolina, and graduated in 2005. His early comic influences included George Carlin, Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, and Sinbad. Carmichael traveled to Los Angeles at the age of 20 to pursue his dream of being a stand-up comedian, despite having never performed comedy. His first experience performing stand-up was at an open mic night at The Comedy Store in West Hollywood. After working his way up through the clubs, he performed in the “New Faces” showcase at the 2011 Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal. He participated on the show, The Goodwin Games (2013).
Carmichael’s second stand-up comedy special, 8 (2017), was directed by comedian Bo Burnham and shot at the Grand Lodge Room of New York’s Masonic Hall. Carmichael then co-created, co-wrote, produced, and starred in the semi-biographical NBC sitcom The Carmichael Show (2015-2017), which was well-received and notable for pushing the envelope by addressing topics such as the Black Lives Matter movement, LGBT issues, gun rights, politics, and the reality of being black in America. He also worked as an executive producer on the Fox sitcom Rel (2018-2019) and directed Drew Michael’s stand-up comedy special Drew Michael in 2018, which was praised for its unique approach. Michael speaks straight to the camera in a dark room with no audience.
Carmichael appeared on Tyler, the Creator’s fifth album, Igor, in 2019, describing the album in short lines to find coherence in the title character’s state of mind. The same year, he was engaged by Quentin Tarantino to co-write a film adaptation of the Django/Zorro crossover comic book series. He will direct and appear in the comedy thriller On the Count of Three in 2021. Burnham also directed Rothaniel, his third HBO special in 2022.
