Grant appeared as Mildred Yates in the 022 American epic historical black comedy drama film Babylon. As he assists in moving an elephant to a bacchanal in Los Angeles in 1926, Manuel “Manny” Torres, a Mexican immigrant, falls in love with Nellie LaRoy, a self-declared “star” from New Jersey. Actress Jane Thornton, who overdosed on narcotics with Orville Pickwick, is replaced by Nellie. Manny gets assistant employment at Kinoscope and meets and befriends problematic movie star Jack Conrad. Elinor St. John, a gossip journalist who also tracks Jack’s career, starts to cover Nellie and calls her the “it girl”.
When Jack’s fame begins to wane in 1932, executives order Manny to fire Fay, a title writer for Kinoscope, since they believe she is homosexual. Jack’s diminishing fame is brought up by Elinor, who also discloses that he is leaving for Europe and Pathé. In his hotel room, Jack shoots himself to death. Due to her gambling debts, eccentric mobster James McKay puts Nellie’s life at danger. To pay off Nellie’s debt, Manny obtains money from drug dealer “The Count” in the movie, but James’s goons assassinate them. Together, they flee to Mexico, where Nellie marries and begins a new life.
In 1952, Manny, who had fled to New York City and opened a radio shop, returns to California with his wife Silvia and daughter. He goes to a neighboring theater to watch Singin’ in the Rain, a movie that shows how the motion picture industry changed from silent to talkies.
