Byrne began her journalism career as a cadet at Melbourne’s The Age newspaper when she was 16 years old. At the age of 23, she was appointed as the paper’s San Francisco reporter and then as a feature writer.

Byrne’s television career began as a researcher for This Day Tonight’s Melbourne unit and later as a Nationwide reporter. She returned to television in 1982, on Nine Network’s Sunday program, after working as an associate editor for The Age’s “Monthly Review” in print. She got a Logie for her story on Paul Keating’s tax meeting on Sunday, 1985.

Byrne worked on the Nine Network’s current affairs show 60 Minutes from 1986 to 1993. She has also hosted ABC Television’s Foreign Correspondent. Byrne narrated the ABC mockumentary television show We Can Be Heroes in 2005. Beginning April 2006, she co-hosted ABC’s First Tuesday Book Club, a panel book review program with regular commentators Marieke Hardy and Jason Steger. The series was renamed The Book Club later on and ended in 2017. Jennifer Presents is a spinoff series of specials from this show.
