Birnbaum began his career with The Wall Street Journal, where he worked for 16 years in various positions before leaving as White House reporter. He subsequently spent seven years as the head of Fortune magazine’s Washington bureau, followed by two years as a senior political correspondent for Time, Fortune’s sister newspaper, beginning in 1995. Birnbaum later worked as a columnist and feature writer for The Washington Post from 2004 to 2008. In 2008, Birnbaum joined The Washington Times as managing editor of digital. In January 2010, Birnbaum departed the Times to work for the lobbying company BGR Group.
Birnbaum is the author of four books. His most recent book, The Money Men, was published in 2000 and looks at political fundraising. His debut novel, Showdown at Gucci Gulch, was written with Alan Murray in 1987. This classic account of the 1986 Tax Reform Act received the American Political Science Association’s prestigious Carey McWilliams Award in 1988. Birnbaum’s second book, The Lobbyists, debuted as a Washington Post bestseller in 1992. Madhouse, Birnbaum’s third book about President Clinton’s White House, was released in 1996.
