Jeff Perry Career
Perry is a co-founder of Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company. He and classmates Gary Sinise and Terry Kinney founded the company at one end of the Highland Park High School cafeteria and eventually relocated it to the Immaculate Conception Church in Highland Park. It has now evolved into a well-known national theater group, with alumni including John Malkovich, John Mahoney, and Joan Allen. Perry, along with co-founders Kinney and Sinise, continues to serve as executive artistic director. Perry relocated to Los Angeles in 1987 to seek a career in cinema and television. Perry is best remembered for his role in the CBS police drama Nash Bridges as San Francisco Police Department inspector Harvey Leek (a fervent Grateful Dead fan).
In the 1998 movie Wild Things, he played a gruff superior to Kevin Bacon’s detective. He has appeared on My So-Called Life (1994), The West Wing (2003), The Practice (2003), Lost (2005), Cold Case (2006), Raines (2007), and several episodes of Grey’s Anatomy (2005) as Meredith Grey’s father, Thatcher Grey. In the critically acclaimed TV drama Prison Break, he took over the role of Terrence Steadman from John Billingsley. Perry has also been in a number of theater shows. Time of Your Life (in San Francisco and Seattle), Grapes of Wrath (on Broadway and in London), and The Caretaker (on Broadway) are among them.
He starred on Broadway in Tracy Letts’ play August: Osage County, which premiered at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre. Off-Broadway, he played Christopher, the violent father in Nina Raine’s Tribes. Perry played Cyrus Beene in the ABC drama series Scandal. Perry appeared in Eugene O’Neill’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles in 2015, alongside his daughter Zoe Perry and actor Kevin McKidd. During the performance, he stated, “During Anna Christie, the biggest challenge I had was working with my daughter and sort of not stopping and asking an audience member for a camera to record the moment.” Perry played editor Stanley Kornik in the ABC drama series Alaska Daily from 2022 to 2023.
