Walls began her career as an intern at The Phoenix in Brooklyn, where she later became a full-time reporter. She wrote the “Intelligencer” column for New York magazine from 1987 to 1993. From 1993 to 1998, she published a gossip column for Esquire, after which she contributed frequently to the gossip column “Scoop” at MSNBC.com from 1998 until her resignation to write full-time in 2007. Walls has written for USA Today, as well as appearing on The Today Show, CNN, Primetime, and The Colbert Report. Dish: The Inside Story on the World of Gossip, published in 2000, was a lighthearted look at the role gossip has played in American media, politics, and everyday life.

Walls published her best-selling memoir The Glass Castle in 2005, detailing the ups and downs of her youth. It provides insight into her life as well as that of her troubled family. Both reviewers and the general public praised The Glass Castle. Over 4 million copies have been sold, and it has been translated into 31 languages. It won the Christopher Award, the Alex Award from the American Library Association, and the Books for Better Living Award.  The film rights of the book were purchased by Paramount, who announced in March 2013 that actress Jennifer Lawrence would play Walls in a film version. On October 9, 2015, it was announced that Lawrence would be replaced by actress Brie Larson in the picture.

Half Broke Horses: A True Story Novel, based on the story of Walls’ grandmother Lily Casey Smith, was published in 2009. The editors of The New York Times Book Review called it one of the ten greatest books of 2009. The Silver Star, Walls’ second novel, was released in 2013. Hang the Moon, her third novel, was released in March 2023.
