Jerry took over ownership of the new Strings, a Team Tennis team, and appointed Jeanie Buss as general manager. She was 19 years old and a student at the University of Southern California at the time (USC). She was in charge of the franchise for a little more than a decade, until it folded in 1993. Buss then founded the Los Angeles Blades in 1993 to bring professional roller hockey to Los Angeles. The franchise competed in the Roller Hockey International league, where she was named Executive of the Year.

Buss was the president of the Great Western Forum, which was the Lakers’ home arena at the time. Her influence with the Lakers grew while she worked at the Forum. She joined the Lakers as executive vice president of business operations in 1999. In 2005, her brother Jim was appointed vice president of player personnel. Their father wanted Buss to eventually run the team’s business and Jim to manage the basketball side. Sporting News named her one of the Top 20 Most Influential Women in Sports in 2005. She was hailed by Forbes as “one of the few powerful women in sports management”.

She was supposed to be the Lakers’ governor and team representative at NBA Board of Governors meetings, positions Jerry held when he was alive, according to Jerry’s succession plan. She took over as president of the Lakers in 2013-14. On February 21, 2017, Jeanie Buss fired Mitch Kupchak as general manager and accepted Jim’s resignation as VP of Basketball Operations.
