Jean Smart is an American actress who originally rose to fame in the CBS series Designing Women from 1986 to 1991. Among the many honors she has been bestowed with are five Primetime Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, four Critics’ Choice Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a Tony Award nomination.

Family – Education
She is the daughter of teacher Douglas Alexander Smart and Kathleen Marie “Kay” (Sanders). She is one of four children’s second. When Smart was thirteen years old, she received a type 1 diabetes diagnosis. First-generation Scottish-American was her father. On Season 10 of Who Do You Think You Are?, Smart learned that she is a maternal descendant of Dorcas Hoar, one of the last women convicted of witchcraft during the Salem witch trials.She is a 1969 alumnus of Ballard High School in Seattle, where she became interested in acting through the drama program. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Washington Professional Actors Training Program.
Husband – Sons
Smart married Richard Gilliland, an actor she met while working on the set of Designing Women. They have two boys. In March 2021, Gilliland passed away following a brief illness.

Deborah Vance, a famed Las Vegas stand-up comedy queen, must reinvent her aging act or risk losing her residency at the Palmetto Casino. Ava is a young comedy writer who can’t find work because of an insensitive tweet and her reputation for being self-centered and pompous. When Ava’s agent assigns her to work as Deborah’s new head writer, the two gradually bond as Ava encourages her new employer to take more risks and Deborah, in turn, assists Ava in working through her own issues.
Legion
Smart portrays Melanie Bird. Dr. Melanie Bird is the human leader of Summerland and the wife of Oliver Bird. She teaches mutants how to harness their powers and protects them from Division 3. Following the events at Clockworks Psychiatric Hospital, Kerry, Ptonomy Wallace, and Melanie went in search of David Haller, the mutant responsible. The group returned to Summerland with what they believed to be David Haller, but they quickly realized that it was actually a mutant called Sydney Barrett with the ability to change bodies.
Melanie assigned Kerry and Ptonomy to find David and bring him to Summerland before Division 3 discovered him. However, David was able to elude them and was eventually taken by Division 3. Melanie planned a rescue operation where Syd, Ptonomy, Kerry, Rudy, and other mutants would save David since she knew that Division 3 held him. They met up with Melanie again on a beach close to the government building after that. After introducing herself, Melanie asks David to stand by her side, and he agrees.
Watchmen
She portrays Laurie Blake in HBO’s Watchmen. Laurel Jane “Laurie” Juspeczyk is a former masked vigilante who assumed the identity of Silk Spectre II after Sally Jupiter, her mother, and the original Silk Spectre retired.
Sally Jupiter departs California and relocates with Laurie to New York City, just in time for Laurie’s debut as the Crimebusters’ youngest member. Laurie meets Captain Metropolis and Doctor Manhattan, which irritates his companion, Janey Slater. Laurie subsequently meets the Comedian, who compliments her on being the spitting image of her mother. Following the meeting, Laurie feels terrible for the Comedian but never forgives him. Sally finally comes to terms with her relationship with the Comedian, even defending him against Laurie’s disparaging remarks following his murder.
Laurie becomes connected with Jon Osterman, also known as Doctor Manhattan, and collaborates with him on domestic operations. Her mother, on the other hand, disapproves of her relationship with Manhattan, equating it to sleeping with a nuclear weapon. On Laurie’s 20th birthday, they move into their own apartment in Washington.
Laurie read Hollis Mason’s biography Under The Hood, which detailed Blake’s sexual assault of her mother during their time in the Minutemen. In 1975, she meets and plays with Adrian Veidt’s genetically produced lynx, Bubastis, on his Antarctica estate.
