Chatzky began her career at Working Woman in 1986, rising from editorial assistant to assistant editor. In 1989, she left journalism to work in Dean Witter Reynolds’ equity research department, before returning to journalism two years later as a reporter/researcher at Forbes. In 1992, she joined the Dow Jones/Hearst start-up SmartMoney, where she rose from staff writer to senior editor. Chatzky returned to Money Magazine in 1998 after a five-year absence. Chatzky has appeared on shows such as Oprah, Live With Regis and Kelly, The View, and others. She has written for Parents, Seventeen, and Cosmopolitan, as well as being a staff writer for SmartMoney and a Forbes fact checker.

Chatzky joined the financial advice website SavvyMoney.com in 2011 as the director of education and editor in chief. Her 2017 book, AgeProof: Living Longer Without Running Out of Money or Breaking a Hip, co-written with Michael F. Roizen, became a New York Times and Wall Street Journal best-seller. Chatzky and journalist Soledad O’Brien launched Everyday Wealth with Soledad O’Brien and Jean Chatzky, a weekly radio show and podcast on personal finance, in January 2022.
