Jayson Stark is an American sportswriter and author who writes about baseball for The Athletic. He is most recognized for his stints at The Philadelphia Inquirer and ESPN. Stark joined ESPN in 2000. He was a senior writer for ESPN.com.

Career

Stark was born in Philadelphia and raised in the Northeast. He graduated from Syracuse University’s S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in 1973 with a degree in journalism. His first journalism job was at the Providence Journal. In 1979, he joined his hometown newspaper, the Philadelphia Inquirer, as the beat writer for the Philadelphia Phillies and eventually became a national baseball writer and columnist. From 1983 to 1999 he created the National Baseball Weekly Report, which “explored the mystery, history and fun of baseball.” He was twice named Pennsylvania Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sports Writers and Sports Writers Association. His observations and analyzes of the 1993 Phillies team have appeared in many books.

Stark joined ESPN in 2000. He is a senior writer for ESPN.com. He also contributes to SportsCenter, ESPNNews, Baseball Tonight and weekly programs during the baseball season on WHB 810 in Kansas City. This happens every week on Mike & Mike. Starting in 2014, Stark began hosting a weekly radio show during the baseball season on Philadelphia’s ESPN radio affiliate. Stark was inducted into the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. Stark was fired from ESPN along with many other on-air personalities on April 26, 2017 . He started writing for Football on April 1, 2018. Stark received the 2019 J. G. Taylor Spink Award from the Baseball Writers Association of America for his “outstanding contributions to baseball writing.”
