Jayam founded SLAASC with seven other Sri Lankans when there were only approximately 1,000 Sri Lankan immigrants in Southern California, a figure that has since climbed to 65,000. Jayam was crucial in bringing the Sri Lankan expatriates in Southern California together so that they may socialize. By his SLAASC, he may be credited with assisting persons who did not have enough money to exist and making funeral arrangements for those who had no one in Southern California.
